This standard applies to the management system used by organisations in delivering their event related activities. It is important to note that BS 8901 is not a checklist but is a more complex document that describes the elements of a management system that an organisation has to have in place.
The other important point is that the standard is not just concerned with environmental or “green” issues but requires organisations to consider all key economical, social and environmental issues that are relevant to their business.
BS 8901 follows the traditional Plan>Do>Check>Act model associated with all management systems.
The planning phase is crucial in identifying the key sustainability issues that the organisation needs to address in delivering its event related activities. Implementation has to be achieved through the clear allocation of roles and responsibilities, the adoption of standard practices and processes and the effective management and control of documentation and records. Checking and controlling has to be achieved through effective monitoring processes as well as auditing and management reviews.
The standard is quite complex, particularly when compared to the ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 standards. It is important for you to understand how the standard applies to you and exactly what constitutes your sustainability management system.
